Design problem
A nineteenth-century stone olive oil factory at the edge of Milas, long out of use, whose walls, arches, chimney and press hold the memory of the town.
Key decision
Keep everything that tells the building's story, and add the new hotel as clearly separate, reversible elements.
Solution
The walls, arches, roof trusses and chimney are repaired; a free-standing steel mezzanine, new steel windows set deep in the old openings and oak furniture turn the pressing hall into the lobby, with the old press at its centre.
Concept project: a design study by our office, not a built project. The images are visualisations.
Aerial view and siting

Spatial plan
The factory and its warehouse form an L around the old yard, now a garden; the few new guest buildings stay low behind the old walls.
Interior

Restoration
The mezzanine stands on its own steel frame and never touches the old walls; it could be taken out again without a trace.
Details

Execution
A fine shadow gap separates the new steel frame from the old stone, and the deep reveal becomes a window seat.
Video
Digital animation made from the concept visualisations; not footage of a built project.
